I got a free copy of The Summer I Found You from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
One of the reasons why I requested this book is the cover. I think the cover is beautiful and it goes well with the title. Both the cover and the title scream ‘dramatic love story’ and I love dramatic and tragic love story. The other reason is one of the main characters has diabetes. My grandfather and my father have diabetes; I know how people with diabetes live. I think that maybe it’s something that (sadly) I could relate to and I just have to read it.
The Summer I Found You is about a girl named Kate, who has just been dumped by her perfect boyfriend. She’s a high school student who’s diagnosed with diabetes. As an attempt to comfort her, Jen, who is Kate’s best friend, invites her cousin Aidan as Kate’s date in a school picnic. Aidan planned on being in the army. However, one trip to Afghanistan has made him lost his one arm. Now, he’s back into town struggling with his new life and trying to decide what he’s going to do with his life.
Kate and Aidan are the center of this book. Kate’s diabetes and Aidan’s disability are the main problem in the story. Kate, thinking that being with Aidan is just a distraction, decides to not telling Aidan about her diabetes. That way, she thinks Aidan will treat her just like any other people. Meanwhile Aidan, not being able to hide his disability, doesn’t like how people treat him.
This book is written from Kate and Aidan’s perspective. I’m not sure if the male lead’s name is Aidan or Aiden because people in the book call him Aidan but his chapters have Aiden Connelly written as the chapters’ title.
I think The Summer I Found You is almost realistic which is good. There’s not much of high school clichés. I don’t know about disabled people, but I do know about diabetes people. Having diabetes requires people to be more discipline with what they eat or what they do. So it’s understandable that Kate is in denial of her condition.
This book maybe is not the greatest book, but it’s a decent read. It has happy ending and probably some find it quite predictable. But it’s a quick read and if you like YA romance you might want to try reading this book.
