This is going to be a quick review because Girl in the Mirror is short and only consists of two short stories. I’m not sure if this is a novella. The first story would be Girl in the Mirror. Girl in the Mirror is a story about Lila and her mysterious grandmother who lives alone in a big house. Her grandmother is afraid of mirror and all the mirrors in the house are covered by black sheets. She never asks her grandmother why and this thing is left as some kind of mystery which she’ll come to learn the truth behind it bitterly.
Since the story is short so I couldn’t really learn more about the characters. Like other Ahern’s books, there’s a little magic in it which what I like from her books. But I find this story a bit creepy. I’ve never read Ahern’s work before that is creepy and I’m not sure if I like it or not. The ending is also a bit mysterious. The characters’ fate is explained a bit vaguely so the readers would have to conclude by their own. To be honest, I was scared after I read this short story and that’s not a feeling I usually get after reading Ahern’s books.
The second story is The Memory Maker. It’s about a man who invented a machine that could write memories on people’s mind. Some people are against this machine and some people actually support this man’s work. This man then opens a ‘clinic’ so he could help those who in need. There are a lot of people who seek help from him and some are people who are just curious. That’s why he recruits a girl who he calls Judith to be his assistant.
I’m not sure if this is magic or the story just doesn’t make sense. But there’s a poetic feeling in this story. The Memory Maker is nice at the beginning and sad in the end. This story is a bit confusing and I sometimes I had to reread the paragraph twice to get the meaning and the feeling.
Overall, this book surprises me. The stories have their own plus and minus points but I get a nice feeling after read this book. I was scared after reading Girl in the Mirror but then The Memory Maker comes and gives me its sweetness and sadness. It felt like riding this rollercoaster of emotion. I like that feeling. I really love another Ahern’s books and this book isn’t like them so if you want to try something new you might want to try this book.
